What is Bitumen Emulsion?

Bitumen emulsion is a stable dispersion of bitumen droplets in water, held together by an emulsifying agent (surfactant). Unlike hot bitumen which must be heated to 150–180°C before application, bitumen emulsion is applied at ambient temperature — making road construction dramatically safer, faster, and more environmentally friendly.

HINCOL bitumen emulsions are cationic, meaning the bitumen droplets carry a positive electrical charge. This makes them adhere strongly to negatively-charged aggregates (silica, granite, basalt) commonly used in Indian roads — delivering superior bond strength compared to conventional cutback bitumen.

When emulsion is applied to a road surface, the water phase evaporates and the bitumen droplets coalesce, forming a continuous bitumen film. This process is called “breaking” — and the time it takes determines the type of emulsion (Rapid, Medium, or Slow Setting).

Types of Bitumen Emulsion — Setting Rate Classification

Bitumen emulsions are classified by setting rate — how quickly they break after application. Each type is suited to different applications:

  • Rapid Setting (RS) — Break within 5–15 minutes. Used for tack coat, surface dressing, grouting, penetration macadam. HINCOL grades: RS1, RS2, HINTAC, Chip Seal RS2.
  • Medium Setting (MS) — Break within 30–60 minutes. Used for premix patching, dense graded premix, OGPC machine mix. HINCOL grades: MS, Premix-M.
  • Slow Setting (SS) — Break time over 60 minutes (some up to 24 hours). Used for prime coat, fog seal, slurry seal, soil stabilization, cold mix bituminous concrete. HINCOL grades: SS1, SS2, SS2-Stab, CMBC.
How Bitumen Emulsion Works — The Science of Breaking

Bitumen emulsion has three components:

  1. Bitumen droplets (40–70% of total volume) — the binder that ultimately remains on the road surface
  2. Water phase (30–55%) — the carrier medium that evaporates during application
  3. Emulsifier (0.5–2%) — the chemical agent that prevents droplets from merging during storage

When bitumen emulsion contacts the road surface and aggregate, the emulsifier’s chemical balance is disrupted. The positively-charged bitumen droplets are attracted to the negatively-charged aggregate surface, water begins to evaporate, and droplets coalesce — forming a continuous bitumen film. This is called “breaking”.

The speed of breaking depends on: emulsifier type, surface characteristics, ambient temperature, humidity, and aggregate composition. HINCOL’s R&D team formulates emulsions to break at precise rates suited to each application.

Applications of Bitumen Emulsion in Road Construction

HINCOL bitumen emulsions are used at every stage of road construction and maintenance:

  • Tack Coat — A thin layer of emulsion applied between two pavement layers to ensure proper bonding. Uses RS1 or HINTAC trackless emulsion.
  • Prime Coat — A penetrating coat applied on the granular base before laying the asphalt layer. Uses SS1 IS or HINPRIME SS1 ASTM.
  • Surface Dressing & Chip Seal — Economical pavement resurfacing — emulsion sprayed and aggregate spread on top. Uses RS2 or Chip Seal RS2.
  • Fog Seal & Slurry Seal — Preventive maintenance treatments that restore aged surfaces and seal fine cracks. Uses SS2.
  • Cold Mix Bituminous Concrete — Pre-mixed bituminous mix that cures at ambient temperature — used for rural roads, pothole repair, trench reinstatement. Uses CMBC or MS.
  • Soil Stabilization & Emulsion Treated Base (ETB) — Strengthening of weak subgrades and granular bases. Uses SS2-Stab.
  • Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) — In-situ recycling of existing damaged pavement. Uses SS2-FDR.
  • Pothole Repair — Quick patching of road potholes using cold mix products. Uses Road Bond (cold mix) or Roadbond Max (solvent-free).
Bitumen Emulsion vs Hot Bitumen — Why Choose Emulsion?

For most modern road construction applications — especially tack coat, prime coat, surface dressing, and cold mix — bitumen emulsion is the preferred choice. It offers lower cost, lower environmental impact, better worker safety, and equivalent or superior road performance compared to hot bitumen.

Advantages of HINCOL Bitumen Emulsion
  • No heating required — Apply at ambient temperature, save fuel, eliminate fire hazards
  • Environmentally friendly — Zero solvent emissions, minimal CO₂ footprint vs hot bitumen
  • Works in monsoon — Many HINCOL grades bond on cool and damp surfaces — year-round application
  • Superior adhesion — Cationic chemistry ensures strong bond with Indian aggregates (silica, granite, basalt)
  • Faster construction — No heating delays, immediate application, faster road opening
  • Cost effective — Lower binder usage, less labour, reduced equipment cost

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about HINCOL bitumen products. For more details, visit our Contact page.

What is the difference between bitumen emulsion and hot bitumen?

Bitumen emulsion is bitumen dispersed in water (with an emulsifier) — applied at ambient temperature with no heating required. Hot bitumen must be heated to 150–180°C before application. Bitumen emulsion is safer (no burns, no fumes), cheaper to apply (no fuel for heating), environmentally cleaner (zero CO₂ from heating), and works in damp/cool conditions — making it the preferred choice for tack coat, prime coat, surface dressing, and cold mix applications.

Which HINCOL bitumen emulsion is best for tack coat?

It depends on the road type:

  • Standard tack coat on urban roads and rural projects → HINCOL Emulsion RS1
  • Trackless tack coat on highways and expressways (high construction traffic) → HINCOL HINTAC
  • Premium tack coat with EN 13808 compliance → HINCOL BONDCOAT (3 grades for varied climates)
What is the difference between PMB and CRMB?

PMB (Polymer Modified Bitumen) is bitumen modified with engineered polymers like SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) for improved high-temperature resistance, elasticity, and fatigue life. HINCOL PMB comes in PMB 40, PMB 70, and PMB 120 grades.

CRMB (Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen) uses recycled tyre rubber (crumb) instead of virgin polymer — making it eco-friendly while delivering similar high-performance properties. HINCOL CRMB comes in CRMB 50, CRMB 55, and CRMB 60 grades. Both are used for highway wearing courses, airport runways, and high-stress pavements.
