HINCOL CRS-2P is a high-performance Cationic Rapid Setting Polymer Modified Bitumen Emulsion specifically engineered for chip sealing (surface dressing) applications. The polymer modification delivers superior adhesion, elasticity, and resistance to deformation — providing a durable, long-lasting seal that significantly enhances road surface performance under heavy traffic loads and extreme climatic conditions.
As part of HINCOL’s complete range of bitumen emulsions, CRS-2P goes beyond standard RS2 emulsions by incorporating polymer modification that improves the emulsion’s ability to withstand traffic stresses and temperature fluctuations — making it the preferred choice for high-traffic national highways, state highways, and regions with widely varying climatic conditions.
Excellent bonding between aggregate chips and the pavement surface — polymer modification ensures chips remain firmly embedded under heavy traffic, preventing aggregate loss.
Polymer-modified binder resists cracking and deformation under heavy traffic loads and temperature changes — unlike conventional RS2 emulsions, CRS-2P flexes rather than fractures.
Greater resistance to weathering and oxidation extends the service life of chip seal treatments — protecting the underlying pavement from water ingress and UV degradation.
Suitable for quick opening to traffic — typically ready in 2 to 4 hours — reducing road closure time and minimising disruption to motorists on busy highways.
Performs reliably in both hot summer conditions and cold winter environments — the polymer modification maintains flexibility across a wide temperature range.
Backed by COLAS SA France’s global expertise in polymer modified emulsions — the same technology used in road construction across more than 50 countries worldwide.
Typical application rates for CRS-2P chip sealing. Actual rate depends on road surface condition, aggregate size, and project specification.
| Application Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Typical Application Rate | 1.4 – 2.0 kg / m² |
| Recommended Aggregate Size | 10 – 14 mm (clean, dry, graded) |
| Minimum Roller Passes | 2 – 3 passes (rubber-tired roller) |
| Curing Time before Traffic | 2 – 4 hours (weather dependent) |
| Seal Coat Post-Sweeping | After full curing — remove loose chips |
Road surface must be clean, dry, and free from dust, loose particles, and debris. All cracks and potholes must be repaired before application. Sweep or blow off the surface thoroughly.
Maintain CRS-2P in tanks at 50°C–60°C. Never heat above 85°C. Stir gently before application to ensure uniformity. Use proper clearance pumps — do not over-circulate.
Apply uniformly using a calibrated distributor truck with spray bars at 1.4–2.0 kg/m². Ensure complete, even coverage. Adjust rate for surface condition and aggregate size used.
Spread clean, dry, uniformly graded aggregate chips (10–14 mm) immediately after emulsion application — before the binder starts curing. Use a self-propelled chip spreader for uniformity.
Use rubber-tired rollers — minimum 2 to 3 passes to properly embed aggregate into the emulsion. Ensure even compaction without displacing chips. Avoid steel-drum rollers.
Allow 2–4 hours curing before opening to traffic (longer in cool/damp conditions). Use traffic management measures during curing. After full set, sweep loose chips off the surface.
Polymer modification significantly extends the service life of chip seal treatments compared to standard RS2 — reducing frequency and cost of road maintenance interventions.
Enhanced adhesion between aggregate and binder prevents chip loss under traffic — reducing the risk of loose stone on road surfaces that can damage vehicles.
Polymer-modified binder flexes under load rather than cracking — preventing reflective cracking from the underlying pavement from propagating through the seal coat.
Designed for high-traffic national and state highways where standard chip seal emulsions may fail prematurely under the cumulative loading of heavy vehicles.
Performs reliably in India’s extreme temperature variations — from hot tropical summers to cold northern winters — without becoming brittle or soft.
A proper polymer-modified bond means less maintenance is required in the future, reducing roadwork exposure for construction crews and road closure costs.
Available for large highway chip seal projects as well as smaller district road maintenance works across India.
Challenge: A 40 km state highway with a deteriorated surface requiring chip seal resurfacing. The route carries high commercial traffic including heavy trucks — previous standard RS2 chip seals had failed in under 2 years due to chip loss and cracking.
Solution: HINCOL CRS-2P polymer modified chip seal was specified. Superior chip retention and polymer-enhanced flexibility prevented both aggregate loss and reflective cracking — delivering significantly improved surface life compared to earlier RS2 treatments.

HINCOL CRS-2P is a Cationic Rapid Setting Polymer Modified Bitumen Emulsion specifically designed for chip sealing (surface dressing) applications on high-traffic roads. It provides superior adhesion between aggregate chips and the pavement surface, with enhanced elasticity and durability that extends the service life of chip seal treatments compared to standard RS2 emulsions.
Chip sealing (surface dressing) is a road maintenance technique where a bitumen emulsion is sprayed over an existing pavement and aggregate chips are immediately embedded into it. It seals surface cracks, restores skid resistance, and protects the underlying pavement from water and UV damage. CRS-2P is preferred for high-traffic chip sealing because polymer modification provides significantly better chip retention, crack resistance, and durability compared to standard RS2 or conventional cationic emulsions.
The typical application rate for CRS-2P is 1.4 to 2.0 kg per square metre, depending on the road surface condition and aggregate size used. The rate should be adjusted to ensure complete and even coverage. Recommended aggregate size is 10–14 mm — clean, dry, and uniformly graded.
CRS-2P typically requires 2 to 4 hours to cure before traffic can be allowed on the treated surface. In cooler temperatures or damp conditions, the curing time may increase. Traffic control measures should be used during the curing period.
CRS-2P should be stored and maintained in tanks at an optimum temperature range of 50°C to 60°C. Never heat above 85°C. The product has a shelf life of 6 months when stored under optimal conditions below 50°C. Never allow to freeze.
Rubber-tired rollers should be used for compaction after aggregate spreading. A minimum of 2 to 3 passes is recommended to properly embed the aggregate into the emulsion. Steel-drum rollers should be avoided as they can crush the chips and cause uneven embedment.
Once the surface has fully cured, post-application sweeping should be carried out to remove any loose aggregate chips that have not adhered to the emulsion. Post-sweeping ensures a cleaner road surface and minimises the risk of loose stone causing vehicle windscreen damage.
