HINCOL Emulsion CMBC

Medium Setting Dense Cold Mix

HINCOL Emulsion CMBC is a medium-setting cationic bitumen emulsion conforming to IS 8887:2004, purpose-formulated for Cold Mix Bituminous Concrete (CMBC) — a dense-graded bituminous wearing course produced and laid at ambient temperature. CMBC provides structural strength and weather resistance equivalent to a hot mix surface without requiring a hot mix plant.

Used extensively on PMGSY roads, state rural roads, and district roads in moderate and cold climate zones (max air temp <40°C), HINCOL Emulsion CMBC enables all-season road construction with significantly lower fuel consumption and up to 85% lower CO₂ emissions vs hot mix. Manufactured by Hindustan Colas Private Limited — HPCL–COLAS SA France joint venture.

Key Benefits

🌡️

No Hot Mix Plant

Dense cold mix — produced at ambient temperature using drum mixer or mobile cold plant.

🌧️

All-Season Construction

Can be laid on slightly damp aggregate surfaces — extends construction window.

🏗️

Dense Wearing Course

Dense-graded mix with 4–6% residual bitumen — structural performance for up to 3000 CVPD.

💰

Low Total Cost

Eliminates hot mix plant, fuel, and long-distance haulage — economical for remote areas.

♻️

85% Lower CO₂

Up to 85% CO₂, 50% SO₂, 40% NOx reduction vs hot mix. Supports green infrastructure goals.

IS 8887:2004 Compliant

Manufactured to IS 8887:2004 under ISO 9001:2015. NABL lab-tested.

Applications

HINCOL Emulsion CMBC is designed for dense cold mix wearing courses where hot mix plants are unavailable or uneconomical.

🛣️

CMBC Wearing Course

Dense-graded cold mix bituminous concrete as 25–40 mm wearing course on rural and district roads.

🌾

PMGSY & Rural Roads

Cold mix CMBC for PMGSY village connectivity — quality paved surfaces without hot mix plant access.

🏔️

Cold Climate Construction

Especially suited to moderate and cold zones (max air temp <40°C) — CMBC maintains workability at lower temperatures.

🔧

Emergency Road Restoration

Rapid restoration of flood-damaged roads — CMBC can be mixed and laid quickly without plant mobilisation.

How to Use — Step by Step

1

Mix Design

Submit aggregate sample to HINCOL lab for mix design. Target residual bitumen 4–6% by dry aggregate weight. Optimum emulsion content typically ≈7%.

2

Prepare Aggregate

Use graded aggregate (SE value ≥50). Slightly damp aggregate (1–2% moisture) helps coating. Remove excess clay or fines before mixing.

3

Mix Emulsion + Aggregate

Add CMBC emulsion gradually to aggregate in drum mixer. Mix 2 minutes until uniform coating. Do not over-mix — prolonged mixing de-coats aggregate.

4

Lay Tack Coat

Apply RS1 tack coat at 0.20–0.25 kg/sqm on prepared surface. Allow to fully break before paving.

5

Lay & Compact

Spread CMBC mix to 30–40 mm loose thickness using paver or rakes. Roll with 8–10 tonne roller. Open to traffic after 2–3 hours.

✅ Best Practices

  • Always carry out mix design before execution — submit aggregate sample to HINCOL technical team
  • Do not lay CMBC when air temperature is below 10°C or during rain/fog
  • If using packed drums: roll drum 5 times before opening to ensure uniform emulsion consistency
  • Keep mixed CMBC in shade if stockpiling — use within 4–6 hours of mixing

Success Story: CMBC Wearing Course — District Road Package, Madhya Pradesh

HINCOL Emulsion CMBC Application

Cold Mix BC — 80 km District Road Package, MP State PWD

Cost Saving: 45% vs Hot Mix

Challenge: An 80 km district road package in rural MP needed a dense wearing course without hot mix plant access. Traditional open-graded cold mix was insufficient for the 500 CVPD traffic loading requirement.

Solution: HINCOL Emulsion CMBC applied at 4.5% residual bitumen using mobile drum mix plant cold. IRI of completed sections measured at spec. All roads handed over on schedule.

FAQs — HINCOL Emulsion CMBC

What is HINCOL Emulsion CMBC?

HINCOL Emulsion CMBC is a medium-setting cationic bitumen emulsion (IS 8887:2004) formulated for Cold Mix Bituminous Concrete (CMBC) — a dense-graded cold mix wearing course produced and laid at ambient temperature without requiring a hot mix plant. Used on rural roads, PMGSY projects, and district roads in moderate-to-cold climate zones.

What traffic volume is CMBC suitable for?

HINCOL Emulsion CMBC is suitable for roads with up to 3000 CVPD (commercial vehicles per day) in moderate or cold climate zones (max air temperature <40°C). For higher traffic volumes, hot mix asphalt or a polymer-modified solution is recommended.

How is CMBC different from Open Graded Premix Carpet?

Open Graded Premix Carpet (using Premix-M or Premix-P) is an open-graded wearing course with voids — suitable for up to 1500 CVPD. CMBC is a dense-graded mix with lower air voids and higher structural strength — suitable for up to 3000 CVPD and offers better waterproofing and surface regularity.

Does CMBC require a hot mix plant?

No. HINCOL Emulsion CMBC is produced at ambient temperature using a drum mixer or mobile cold mix plant — no hot mix plant, no aggregate heating, and no petroleum-based diluent required. This makes CMBC ideal for remote locations and environmentally sensitive areas.

What are the CO₂ savings of CMBC vs hot mix?

Cold Mix CMBC production results in up to 85% lower CO₂ emissions, up to 50% lower SO₂, and approximately 40% lower NOx compared to equivalent hot mix asphalt production — in addition to saving approximately 6 litres of fuel per MT of mix produced.
