HINCOL Emulsion SS2-Stab

Emulsion Treated Base | Soil Stabilization | Recycling | FDR

HINCOL Emulsion SS2-Stab is a Slow Setting Cationic Bitumen Emulsion specifically formulated for Emulsion Treated Base (ETB) construction, soil stabilization, in-situ pavement recycling, and Full Depth Reclamation (FDR). Manufactured to IS 8887, it is backed by HINCOL’s global expertise through parent organization COLAS SA, France — with experience in bitumen stabilization technology across more than 50 countries.

As part of HINCOL’s comprehensive range of bitumen emulsions, SS2-Stab disperses among the finer aggregate particles of the treated base material — creating a bitumen-rich mortar that significantly increases cohesive strength, reduces moisture susceptibility, and improves the structural durability of the treated layer. The result is an Emulsion Treated Base that performs at par with or better than virgin aggregate bases, at significantly lower cost.

🏗️

Increases Structural Strength

Bitumen treatment significantly increases cohesive strength of treated material, allowing ETB to replace higher-quality materials in upper pavement layers — with major cost savings.

💧

Reduces Moisture Susceptibility

Bitumen encapsulates finer particles, immobilizing them and creating a water-resistant structure that significantly reduces moisture sensitivity and deformation under wet conditions.

♻️

In-Situ Recycling — Eco-Friendly

Enables pavement rehabilitation by recycling existing materials in place — eliminating haulage of new aggregates, reducing carbon footprint, noise, dust, and traffic disruption.

🌡️

Not Temperature Sensitive

Unlike hot mix asphalt, ETBs constructed with SS2-Stab are not temperature sensitive — the bitumen is not continuous throughout the mix, eliminating temperature-related rutting risks.

💰

Cost Effective

No heating required. Lower-quality aggregates can be used. Eliminates expensive import of new materials. Minimises traffic disruption and detour construction costs.

Applications of HINCOL Emulsion SS2-Stab

🏗️ Emulsion Treated Base (ETB)

Granular materials (crushed stone, gravel, or recycled aggregates) are treated with SS2-Stab to create a structurally improved base layer. ETBs exhibit significantly increased cohesion, improved moisture resistance, and sufficient flexibility to prevent cracking under traffic loads. Suitable for both new road construction and pavement rehabilitation.

🌱 Soil Stabilization

Subgrade soils and granular base materials are stabilized with SS2-Stab emulsion combined with active filler (cement ≤1% or hydrated lime) to improve bearing capacity, reduce moisture susceptibility, and enhance durability of the pavement foundation. Particularly effective on WMM layers.

♻️ In-Situ Pavement Recycling

Existing deteriorated road pavements are pulverized using recyclers and treated with SS2-Stab in place. The recycled material — including old asphalt, base, and subbase — is mixed with the emulsion to form a new stabilized base layer, eliminating haulage of new materials entirely.

🔄 Full Depth Reclamation (FDR)

The full pavement depth — surface, base, and subbase — is reclaimed and treated with SS2-Stab to form a new high-quality base layer. FDR with SS2-Stab is the most cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach to rehabilitating severely deteriorated roads while retaining existing road geometry.

How ETB Construction with SS2-Stab Works

1

Pavement Investigation

Detailed investigation of existing pavement — layer thicknesses, material properties, subgrade CBR, moisture conditions — to assess suitability for in-situ recycling or ETB construction.

2

Mix Design

Laboratory mix design determines optimum SS2-Stab bitumen content (typically ≤3% by dry mass) and active filler content (cement ≤1%), balancing strength, moisture resistance, and flexibility.

3

In-Situ Recycling / Mixing

Recycler pulverizes existing pavement layers. SS2-Stab is injected via the recycler tanker connection and thoroughly mixed with the granular material in a single pass.

4

Primary Compaction

Single-drum vibrating roller achieves density requirements in lower two-thirds of the layer. High amplitude vibration, travel speed ≤3 km/h, correct rolling pattern are critical.

5

Grading & Finishing

Grader cuts final levels from the treated ETB layer. Surface is pre-wetted before grading to prevent lamination. Secondary compaction achieves full density and surface finish.

6

Surfacing

After full curing, a thin surfacing layer (asphalt overlay or chip seal) is applied. HINCOL RS1 or HINCOL HINTAC tack coat is applied before the overlay.

Key Advantages of HINCOL SS2-Stab Bitumen Stabilization

✅ Increased Pavement Strength

ETB with SS2-Stab replaces higher-quality materials in the upper pavement — a G2-quality material treated with SS2-Stab can substitute an asphalt base at significantly lower cost.

✅ Improved Durability

Bitumen encapsulates fine particles and immobilizes them — dramatically improving moisture sensitivity and durability of the treated base material.

✅ Lower Quality Aggregates Usable

SS2-Stab treatment allows use of locally available marginal aggregates that would otherwise not meet specifications for untreated base layers.

✅ Not Temperature Sensitive

Unlike hot mix asphalt, ETBs are not temperature sensitive — the bitumen is dispersed only among finer particles, not continuous throughout.

✅ Environmental Sustainability

Conservation of natural aggregates, reduction in transport requirements, lower noise, dust and exhaust emissions, and less traffic disruption compared to conventional rehabilitation.

✅ Ease of Rehabilitation

The primary failure mode of ETBs is permanent deformation — far easier to rehabilitate than full-depth cracking that typically affects cement treated materials.

✅ Minimal Traffic Disruption

In-situ recycling with SS2-Stab works in half-widths, opening lanes to traffic soon after completion — no detours needed for most projects.

✅ HINCOL Technical Support

Full mix design, quality control, field supervision, troubleshooting, and training provided by HINCOL’s experienced team and NABL-accredited laboratories.

Success Story: Pavement Rehabilitation with SS2-Stab Full Depth Reclamation

HINCOL SS2-Stab ETB Full Depth Reclamation Road Rehabilitation

Full Depth Reclamation — 30 km State Highway Rehabilitation

Completed — Structural Improvement Confirmed

Challenge: A 30 km state highway with severely deteriorated pavement — full-depth cracking, base failure, and poor drainage. Conventional reconstruction estimated at 3× higher cost with 60 days road closure.

Solution: Full Depth Reclamation using HINCOL SS2-Stab recycled the existing pavement in place. The treated ETB layer with optimum bitumen content (2.5%) and 0.8% cement provided structural strength equivalent to an asphalt base — with zero import of new aggregates and only 12-hour half-width closures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HINCOL Emulsion SS2-Stab used for?

HINCOL Emulsion SS2-Stab is a Slow Setting Cationic Bitumen Emulsion specifically designed for Emulsion Treated Base (ETB) construction, soil stabilization, in-situ pavement recycling, and Full Depth Reclamation (FDR). It significantly increases the cohesive strength and moisture resistance of treated granular base materials — for both new road construction and pavement rehabilitation projects.

What is Emulsion Treated Base (ETB) and how does SS2-Stab work?

An Emulsion Treated Base (ETB) is a pavement base layer where granular material is treated with SS2-Stab bitumen emulsion. The bitumen disperses only among the finer particles of the mix — creating a bitumen-rich mortar between coarse particles that significantly increases cohesion and reduces moisture sensitivity. ETBs remain granular in character (unlike asphalt) and are designed per IRC 37: 2012/2018.

What is the difference between SS2 and SS2-Stab?
  • SS2: For road surface maintenance — Fog Seal, Slurry Seal, Premix Seal Coat on existing bituminous pavements.
  • SS2-Stab: For structural base improvement — ETB construction, soil stabilization, in-situ recycling, and FDR. Has additional residue properties (Penetration 60–120, Ductility min 50) suited for base layer structural work.
What is Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) and how does SS2-Stab help?

Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) is a rehabilitation technique where the entire existing pavement structure — asphalt surface, base, and subbase — is pulverized and mixed with HINCOL SS2-Stab in place. The treated ETB layer eliminates import of new aggregates, reduces project cost by 40–65% vs conventional reconstruction, minimizes traffic disruption, and creates a structurally superior recycled base.

What materials can be treated with HINCOL SS2-Stab?
  • Crushed stone of all rock types
  • Previously untreated natural gravels
  • Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) material
  • Reclaimed pavement layers (previously stabilized crushed stone/gravel)
  • Marginal materials such as sands (with experienced design)
  • WMM (Wet Mix Macadam) stabilization — with Portland cement and SS2-Stab
What is the typical bitumen content for ETB using SS2-Stab?

The residual bitumen emulsion added for ETB construction typically does not exceed 3% by mass of dry aggregate. Active filler (cement or hydrated lime) is often added at up to 1% by mass. The ratio of bitumen percentage to cement percentage must always be greater than 1 — if this ratio falls below 1, the material should be considered a cement treated material rather than ETB.

What are the key benefits of bitumen stabilization with SS2-Stab?
  • Increased strength: ETB can replace higher-quality materials in upper pavement layers — significant cost savings.
  • Improved durability: Bitumen encapsulates fine particles, improving moisture resistance.
  • Lower quality aggregates can be used successfully.
  • Not temperature sensitive — unlike hot mix asphalt, reduces temperature-related rutting risk.
  • Environmental benefits: Conservation of natural aggregates, reduced haulage, lower emissions.
  • Ease of rehabilitation: Primary failure mode is permanent deformation — far easier to fix than cracking.
What is the difference between ETB and cold mix asphalt?

ETB and cold mix asphalt are fundamentally different. In ETBs, the bitumen only disperses among the finer particles — coarser aggregate particles remain uncoated. This results in a granular material with improved cohesion, not a bitumen-coated mix. ETBs are not black, have no sticky feel, and are not prone to cracking under tensile stress. Cold mix asphalt has continuous bitumen coating on all aggregate sizes and behaves like asphalt.

Is HINCOL SS2-Stab compliant with IS 8887?

Yes. HINCOL Emulsion SS2-Stab is manufactured conforming to IS 8887 specification for Slow Setting Cationic Bitumen Emulsion. Quality testing is conducted for every batch (sieve, viscosity, storage stability) and every 200 MT (particle charge, residue properties including penetration, ductility, and solubility) under ISO 9001:2015 certified processes.

What is the storage life of HINCOL SS2-Stab?
  • Short-term (3–5 days): Can be easily stored without special measures.
  • Medium-term (up to 2 weeks): Gentle weekly agitation or drum rolling to maintain homogeneity.
  • Maximum storage: Up to 3 weeks in cleaned tanks stored at 10°C–50°C.
  • Never heat above 85°C, freeze, or over-circulate the emulsion.
What are the construction methods for SS2-Stab ETB projects?
  • In-Situ Treatment: Using recyclers directly on the road for rehabilitation projects — minimizes haulage and traffic disruption.
  • In-Plant Mixing: Material processed in a purpose-built mixing plant — better control of input materials and quality, suited for new construction with virgin aggregates.

ETB construction must be done at temperatures above 5°C. The recycled ETB layer remains granular in character and is processed using the same compaction equipment as unbound granular materials.
