How bitumen emulsion works

Three ingredients
Hot bitumen, water and an emulsifying agent are metered in precise proportions. The emulsifier is what lets oil-like bitumen mix with water at all.

Sheared in a colloid mill
A high-speed colloid mill shears the hot bitumen into microscopic droplets — typically just a few microns across — and disperses them through the water.

A stable, brown liquid
The emulsifier coats every droplet with an electrical charge, so droplets repel each other and stay suspended. The result is a brown, free-flowing emulsion that pumps and sprays cold.

Breaks and sets on the road
Once applied, the emulsion “breaks”: water separates and evaporates, the droplets coalesce, and the colour turns from brown to black — a continuous bitumen film that binds the aggregate.
